The
regional district of Makrigialos lies on the south east coast of
Crete some 35 kms from Sitia. The area faces the Libyan Sea (part
of the Mediterranean), which separates the island from North Africa,
just over 350 kms away. The backdrop to the north is mountainous
from where small valleys and gorges lead down to the coast. On the
slopes are an abundance of walnut, apple, pear, orange, lemon, lime,
fig and olive trees. Along the coast the produce grown is tomatoes,
peppers, cucumbers, aubergines and bananas, all of which are harvested
throughout the year. The coastline is etched with rocky inlets,
small coves and long sweeping stretches of sandy beaches.

The
Bay of Makrigialos boasts the longest shallowest beach of East Crete.
Close to Makrigialos are three beautiful gorges for hiking through
- Butterfly gorge, Pefki gorge above the White River hamlet and
Pervolakia gorge, which starts from the monastery of Kapsa and is
the most impressive. Other places worth exploring are the peaceful
timeless traditional villages tucked away in the mountains overlooking
the sea.

Each village is unique with stone built houses, narrow paved streets,
traditional tavernas or cafenions and offer a friendly and welcoming
atmosphere for visitors and locals alike. There are many small churches
scattered around the hillside, some built in caves or by the side
of springs and in the most charming of settings. Also around the
area there are many archaeological sites and much of the items excavated
can be found in the Museum in Agios Nikolaos.

Within
the town centre, (the whole of which is a narrow strip of about
2 kms along the edge of sandy beaches), an area is being re-designated
to allow for selected development. The plan is to create a 'chequer
board' of two floor only apartments surrounded by 'fallow land',
all with sea views: The sea and beaches are only a two minute walk
from any part of the town. Golf-Properties-In-Crete, with advance
knowledge of these plans have already helped a consortium of developers
(which already has at least 10 golf courses worldwide) to purchase
large areas of land around the town for golf courses.

This
group has also acquired several plots in Makrigialos and plan to
build luxury apartments to capitalise on the amenities to hand.
These units are designed to sell at a price circa €300,000.
Already land prices have risen due to the Sitia airport scheme and
plans under discussion for several quality golf courses all within
a 10-minute drive from Makrigialos. It should be remembered that
this part of Crete is closer to North Africa than mainland Greece
and boasts long summers and short mild winters. Rainy days are few
and the temperature almost never drops below 45 F during the few
days of 'winter'.
As
recently outlined in the press, a leading promoter of golf and sailing
events has signed a memorandum of understanding to begin the construction
of a prestige golf course in the north east of the area. As a result
Golf Properties in Crete are expecting, for those investing in their
properties, a steady increase of property values.
